Comicster keeps crashing!
Today my PC locked up and I had to shut it down from the power switch. When I restarted, Comicster couldn't load my database as it had been corrupted but fortunately I had a backup from the day before. However now when I load it up Comicster shuts down after only a minute or two. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program but this hasn't helped.
What makes things worse is that I have a large comics database (over 15,000 issues) which means it takes a very long time to load up. The file is attached - any ideas?

Damn, you weren’t kidding about your collection taking a while to load! Took maybe 10 *minutes* for me!
It’s been open for a few minutes now and I haven’t seen a crash, so I don’t think it’s the file itself causing issues. Do you see an actual error message or does Comicster just “disappear”?
First thing to try, I guess, would be to uninstall Comicster and then reinstall. Just in case something got corrupted when your machine froze up.
Cheers,
Matt

So just the act of clicking “Browse" causes the crash? Or is it after you select an image and click “OK”? If I can, I will see if I can reproduce it here. Maybe give me the exact issue number and perhaps even the image path.

Ten minutes to load sounds about right! On the other hand all the changes I make happen in real time, which wasn't always the case on the original version of Comicster, which loaded quickly but could take five minutes or more to add an issue! I only upgraded when I bought my new laptop last April; wish I'd done it earlier!
I'm trying to change the names of the cover images (looking at each issue in turn, using Properties then Browse) and I'm currently on Supergirl volume 4. When I go there I get a Windows error message that Comicster has stopped working and then the program closes down.
I did try uninstalling (via the control panel) and reinstalling but I suspect not everything disappeared as the add-on skins I had are still there; I would have expected a completely fresh version.
Thanks for looking into this.
Gordon

It's Supergirl volume 4, issue numbers around the sixties. Just bringing that range up on screen seems to cause Comicster to crash.
I'm wondering if the file became corrupted in the past and the problem is only showing up now because I'm looking at those issues. That might even have caused the original lock-up.
I might try deleting that title entirely and re-entering them.

Or perhaps deleting any image files that you're pointing to from those issues. Maybe it's choking trying to load the cover images.

The odd thing is that unlike the previous version of Comicster, when changing the name of the cover image file would result in a 'no image' box against that issue, the current version still shows the cover! I haven't tested this through closing and reopening the file but certainly it retains the image even before the Properties field is updated.
But I'll delete the images and start that title again from scratch. Only 81 issues so shouldn't take that long... *sigh*

I think under the hood Windows itself is caching the image. There's some web caching tech going on in the image loading system. Still, let's see if deleting the underlying image files helps (or moving them somewhere else entirely if you don't want to lose them).

Well, I deleted the title *and* the image folder and I've been cautiously navigating around for the last ten minutes or so and everything seems fine. I can only assume that the file was corrupted and this never showed up before because I wasn't trying to access that particular title. Does it crash for you when you look at that title (Supergirl vol. 4, in the Superman folder under Ongoing Titles)?
Thanks for your help, Matt - I use Comicster virtually every day and I'd feel lost without it! Speaking of which, didn't you used to have a 'Donate' button? I'd like to make a contribution, not just for the help but for the whole program, which I've been using for several years.

Mate, it’s my pleasure. It’s not a project I actively work on anymore so I don’t feel the need to take donations.
I don’t have a crash when browsing through the Supergirl Vol 4 issues, so I’m definitely leaning towards a corrupt image file causing the problem.
Glad I could help! By all means give me a shout if anything else goes wrong.
Cheers,
Matt
